Restoration of the Memorial Gardens

On Thursday 14th September 2006, Melton’s historic Memorial Gardens were re-opened by Senior Townwarden Ken Saunders.

The restoration of the gardens was undertaken under the advice of Feoffee John Rudman with contributions from the Asfordby Mine Grant Scheme, the Melton & Oakham Waterways Society, the Bickley Trust, the Civic Society and the Melton Mowbray Town Estate.

The gardens are in two parts, the formal garden of the Victoria Cross shaped rose beds, and the Yew trees and woodland gardens, which is an informal area of lawns and trees. The gardens were redesigned by the well-known firm of Wyatt, for Lord Grey de Wilton in the 19th century.

Melton Mowbray Town Estate purchased the gardens in 1929 for £500 and over the years age has caught up with much of the original planting. With the support of local companies and organisations it was decided to carry out the scheme of restoration.
