Peace & Tranquillity

Children's Playground in the Play Close with St. Mary's Church in the backgroundThe Town Estate own and maintain the Town Centre Parks as a haven of Peace and Tranquillity for visitors, offering an abundance of differing landscapes and planting schemes.

The Gardens and Parks boast a wealth of history, places to sit, think and play and there are also plenty of walks for your enjoyment.

There are 4 distinct areas of Parkland; the Main Park area, Leicester Road Sports Ground, Egerton Park and Egerton Lodge Memorial Gardens.

The Main Park area consists of Play Close, New Park and Priors Close, each area being purchased and developed individually.

Originally just the small Play Close area; the parks were increased and extended by purchasing different areas – The field where the swings are 1872 – The Old Canal now filled in and planted with chestnut trees 1886 – New Park 1906 / 8 and Priors Close (actually a gift) 1985 – to the current area we see today.

There are also gardens at Leicester Road Sports Ground; a large park / sports ground at Egerton Park and pleasure garden with Garden of Remembrance next to Egerton Lodge.

Whether you want to sit and contemplate, relax and listen to a band concert or watch your children play, Melton Parks have something for you.
