Corn Cross

The Corn CrossThe corn market was held on Cornhill, at the top of High Street or Merridine Street, as it was previously called, and the Corn Cross stood in the centre of the roadway and around it was the corn market. The Corn Cross was rebuilt on the site in 1996.

There are dedication plates commemorating the lives of Richard Henry Burton VC and Air Vice-Marshall James Edgar "Johnnie" Johnson.

The inscription below is on a plaque that commemorates Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II visit to Melton on Friday 28th June 1996.

"At this Corn Cross, Her Majesty was presented with locally produced gifts of Pork Pie, Stilton Cheese and Hunt Cake by the Mayor of the borough of Melton Councillor Robert Hyslop".
