Sheep Cross

The sheep market was held in Spital End (Nottingham Street), it sold between 50,000 and 60,000 sheep annually. This Market extended the whole length of the street with the “Shepe Cross” or Sheep Cross standing near the site of the Baptist Chapel in Nottingham Street. It was probably removed in the 17th or early 18th Century. The sheep market continued to be held in the street until 1870 when it was transferred to the new cattle market site.
